iPhone to get SlingPlayer?

By Richard Menta 1/11/08

Any type of iPhone or iPod rumor always has to be taken with a grain of salt, but enough have been accurate that it is reasonable to entertain the best ones as at least a possibility. The latest juicy rumor says that a version of SlingPlayer is in the works for both the iPhone and iPod touch.

This new iPhone rumor comes from electricpig.tv who claim that they have had a good talk with an "extremely senior source at Sling". The source told electricpig "iPhone and iPod touch are OS X devices, and we can write OS X apps with our eyes closed. It's coming."

The source did not give a timeline when SlingPlayer for iPhone and iPod touch will appear, but he supposedly felt that the iPod touch was a better device for the new application because of its exclusive Wi-Fi connection. The source supposedly had concerns that AT&T's edge network was too slow to stream video to the iPhone, a curious comment since the iPhone has Wi-Fi also.

"We know the 3G iPhone's coming" is another comment garnered by the folks over at electricpig, though the source did not say if Sling Media has a direct relationship with Apple at present that might help validate the 3G rumor is genuine insider information.

From a logistic standpoint an iPhone is a lot easier for the weary road warrior to carry around town than a laptop, so SlingPlayer for the iPhone sounds like a compelling idea. We'll have to wait to see if the rumor is true first.
