Apple Turns to Samsung for iPod Brain

By Richard Menta 4/27/06

We saw how badly PortalPlayer's stock collapsed once word was released Apple would no longer rely on the company for the iPod's processor. PortalPlayer supplied the processor for all of the iPods several generations and to lose out that contract was a critical blow to the company's finances. Now we can watch the stock rise from the winner of the "Who will supply the iPod's processor?" contest. The winner is Samsung.

Yep, the company that gave Apple such a good deal on its flash memory for the iPod nano that governments are investigating, now will produce most of the internals of next gereation iPods. Not bad.

The Creative Zen Vision M is available on Amazon

According to a report by the EE Times the word was leaked by Samsung executive Jon Kang at the SEMI Strategic Business Conference. “I knew PortalPlayer would take a dive,” said Kang, senior vice president for the technical marketing group at Samsung Semiconductor Inc. “I knew that we would win this design."
