iPod Sales Slightly Short of Expectations

By Richard Menta 7/18/06

Apple announced today that it sold 8.1 million iPods for the third quarter, a 32% increase from last year, but slightly below analysts already reduced expectations of 8.3 million units. Otherwise, the company saw its second highest quarterly sales and earnings thanks to increased sales of the Intel-based Macs.

Apple touted during the presentation that the iPod holds 75% of the US market, but analysts are concerned that without a new player in the immediate horizon Apple's ability to sustain growth is constrained. Of course, Apple is always tight-lipped about upcoming products so there could very well be a new iPod/iTunes announcement at the upcoming developers conference.
