iPad 2

As expected Apple unveiled the second generation iPad with the (as also expected) name of the iPad 2.

The iPad 2 at 8.8mm wide is one-third slimmer than the original iPad, which came in at 13.4 mm. In fact, the iPad 2 is even thinner than the most recent incarnation of the iPhone, which scores a 9.3mm on the depth scale. The iPad 2 is also lighter, weighing in at 1.3 lb versus the original's 1.5lb presence. That alone makes an important difference for a unit where much of the weight came by way of the battery. Battery life for the iPad 2 remains the same at 10 hours.

The iPad 2 will sport Apple's A5 dual-core processor, which doubles the CPU speed and increases graphic speed nine-fold. Like the latest version of the iPod touch the iPad 2 now includes two video cameras, one forward-facing and one rear-facing. The unit will come in two colors, white and black, and will work with both AT&T and Verizon's 3G services. The iPad 2 also offers HDMI out with the purchase of a $39 dongle. Prices for all flavors remain the same as with the original iPad and Apple has put a ship date of March 11th for the states and March 25th for overseas sales.
